COMFORT BAgS

What is the comfort bag program?

This program was inspired by Louis Tudor’s experiences in the hospital. Before his passing, Louis often mentioned feeling cold and anxious during his stays. To honor his memory, we created a way to bring warmth and comfort to patients waiting for mental health services.

In collaboration with the ER at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Tudor House successfully piloted the Comfort Bag Program in November. We’re now preparing for its official launch of monthly bag deliveries in January 2025.

Why is this program so important?

Emergency room visits for mental health crises can be overwhelming. Patients, ranging in age from 5 to 99, often endure long waits—sometimes 20+ hours—for inpatient psychiatric placement. Carilion admits 15 new patients per day, many of whom arrive with no personal belongings or support.

Comfort Bags provide a much-needed source of support, offering warmth, distraction, and reassurance during these challenging times. Feedback from the pilot program indicates these bags make a tangible difference, offering patients a sense of community support when they need it most.
